Bald Eagle

Bald eagle (male)
British Columbia has one of the largest eagle populations in the world. They feed mainly on fish but also take small mammals. I've even seen one attempt to take off with a deer fawn in its talons.

My canoe

It's a 17.5 foot Clipper Tripper made of KevlarŪ by Clipper Canoes of Abbotsford, B.C.. It weighs 60 pounds and will carry a load of 800 pounds. It handles beautifully in fast rivers, big lakes and even the ocean. For propulsion I use the bent-shaft paddles made of cedar by Grey Owl Paddles. There is no keel and the flotation is built into the bottom. It also had integrated cargo tie-downs and the front seat is on an adjustable slider to give maximum legroom and position for paddling efficiency.

Cattleguards

These pipes are installed on roadways to prevent cattle from crossing.

Gates and fences

When traveling through these wilderness areas be aware that this is also open rangeland for ranches in this region. Please close all gates after you've gone through.

Upper Dean River

Dean River

The Dean River is legendary for producing gigantic Steelhead trout, some more than 30 pounds in it's lower reaches. Here, near it's outlet from Nimpo Lake, its a sluggish shallow estuary but the trout are still here in good numbers. Years ago I fished this stretch and hooked more than 20 wild fish in an afternoon on flies, average size is around 14-20 inches. Best time is just after ice-out in May.

For Steelhead fishing in the lower reaches the best time is in August and September.

Comments for Darby2 about Chilko Lake

Chilko Lake is beautiful, but I strongly advise against the Lodge. The owner, Brian McCutcheon kept stringing my family along about a possible raft trip. When we arrived the raft trip was cancelled and Brian was very rude.
